Reputable Breeders & Irresponsible Breeders
There are different types of breeders and different ways of keeping their cats.
Below I have a little advice on what to look out for when looking at breeders.
NOTE - HOST CATS
Please beware of breeders that will allow a kitten to go on a
host basis, this
can sometime work out well with a reputable breeder but can be something that
doesn't
work out well at times. If you are thinking of having a kitten on a host basis
it is
worth doing your homework about the breeder you are looking at to do this
agreement
with, contact other breeders to ask about the breeder in question and if they
would
in fact look at going down the route themselves with the breeder you are looking
at
taking this step with. Ask them if they could help you find a reputable breeder
they
would do this with as it is best to know as much about the breeder as possible
and become
good friends before you take this step. Never take this step with a breeder who
has older
kittens they are having trouble selling, this is something that should be
arranged before
the litter is due or the queen is even pregnant.
Reputable Breeders
1. Breeders that are working to Improve his or her lines.
2. Breeders that screen for diseases known to affect the breed and maintain
veterinary records showing what their cats have been screen for with results.
3. Provide quality care for their kittens and cats.
4. Allow you to see how all their cats and kittens live in their care.
5. Is not out to make money from their cats and kittens and their first
priority is health and to find the right home for their kittens.
6. Never allows their kittens to leave until at least 13 weeks of age
and supplied with a pedigree and papers (Vaccination card etc)
7. Will always help re-home a cat that may need to be re-homed for whatever
reason.
Irresponsible breeders
1. Breeders that do not care much about the breed standard or
protecting the breed or improving what they have.
2. Breeders that breed from their own pet quality cat just because they
have a pedigree rather than improving on what they have.
3. Little thought is given to the kittens or cats health and care.
4. Breeders that do not screen their cats for diseases or to ensure good health.
5. Breeder that will let their kittens go early or in ill health.
6. Breeders that are in breeding just to line their own pockets.
7. There are plenty of Titled cats who may be excellent on the show bench
but this does not mean their kittens will be of the same standard.
